Well here goes another full year of scouting! Thank you for all your ideas at the troop forum on Tuesday night, which we will incorporate into the programme for you, a copy of the programme will be coming to you shortly.
There have been some changes to patrol leaders & assistant patrol leaders and we look forward to helping you develop into these roles with confidence, be prepared to take the lead!
We have had a few cubs join us and some more are yet to come - we look forward to you becoming scouts and joining in our general 1st Whittington fun!
The patrol points system will be up and running as from next week, so get ready to earn the points and claim a reward! (Eagle patrol, the winners from last term, we haven't forgot about you - your reward is being organised - more details to follow!!!).
We will be focusing this term on the fitness challenge badge so get your 'healthy' heads on! We will be giving you lots of sporting/fitness opportunities as well as looking at healthy eating & healthy lifestyles. As per usual we will be having lots of fun and games along the way. Take Tuesday night for example-how much fun can you have with a pack of balloons????eh Martin????

PEAK 2010 - WOW !!!!!!!!!!!
We didn't want to come home :(
A fantastic week was had by all - loads of stuff done! - making friends, dressing up, dancing, raving, general stupidity, glow stick waving, octopus wobbling, good food, GCS presentation, dining out, tea making, biking, hiking, badge swapping, cricket playing, parachute waving, crafts, canoeing, archery, music making, camp fire singing, circus skills, environment work, team building, football skills, tag rugby, rifle shooting, climbing, abseiling, bouncing on inflatables, bungee jumping, clock making, bell ringing, stone carving, line dancing, woggle making, well dressing, engraving, painting, table tennis, cyber surfing, ice cream eating, badge making, and much more!
We have made some great new friends - Lizzie and Jess- guides/rangers who wanted to join 1st Whittington and generally spent all their free time with us!, the two bush craft guys who always had a funny comment for us, Steph, Rog, Katie and Graham the wonderful subcamp team of Barrier Reef who kept everything running smoothly for us, and 131st Derby scouts who were great neighbours.
The weather wasn't too bad except for Fri evening when breaking camp - Skip got wet!!! so did Mark, Tony, Pete, Ash, and Jack organizing the kit and ferrying scouts to parents.
The scouts were fantastic and rose to the 1st Whittington silliness challenges everytime, you behaved brilliantly and were a pleasure to be around. Best of all I have realised just what good friends you all are. When giving out the end of camp certificates you all knew exactly who was who just by a few words, you all know each other so well!!!!
Sadly we say goodbye to Harvey and Ella as scouts but we hope they will not be strangers and look forward to welcoming them to our events and activities when they're not at explorers.
Parents you were great getting the scouts kit together and ensuring they had everything they needed. You brought them on time and collected when needed many many thanks.
My huge gratitude goes out to my amazing full time team - Mark, Tony and Jane. Your were so supportive, daft and hard working, I couldn't have managed without you!!! also massive thanks go out to Ali who went to work full time during the week and then drove up to Peak every evening with all the days shopping - you made things run soooo smoothly and nade sure we never went without - you are amazing! and finally thanks go out to sandwich makers/ helpers Claire, Marg, Ash and Jack who came, saw it needed doing and did it! What a super team 1st Whit leaders make!!!!!
Do we really have to wait another 5 years until the next Peak? Come on scouts start counting!

PEAK 2010 ! ! ! ! !
We're finally here - 23rd July 2010.
You'll be pleased to know that your tents have been errected and the site (our pitch!) is clear of smelly sheep poo - huge thanks go out to the parents who came to help yesterday evening -
Julie, Karen, Kay, Dave, Martin & his dad! and Andy, Pete, John and Jess - your help was greatly appreciated and means we only have the kitchen to organise later and we're up and running! (I need the kitchen sorting cos I need to have my COFFEEEEEE'S!!!!!)
The weather looks like its improving but may be rather cloudy booooooo!- but as long as its dry we'll be happy!
Remember - you will get out of this camp what you put into it! You can try loads of activities, just chill around the camp, make new friends, join in with the competitions, learn new skills, catch up with friends you didn't know were in scouting/guiding, catch up with old friends and generally have a laugh (that's what us leaders are aiming to do!).
See you there !!!!

Bivouac Fun!

Well done to all you scouts to came on the bivouac camp - you did really well! The weather was fine, thank fully! Your shelters and yourselves survived the night, you cooked all your own meals, and managed your own sites without too much assistance. We had a great camp fire and many silly 1st Whittington moments - fun times (I have managed to get the cake out of my hair now!).
Special praise goes to the scouts who managed the teams (Charlie, Jacob, Kieran, Andy, Harvey & Conner), participants who particularily stood out as great scouts and showed real team work skills and consideration for others, were Jack G, Megan, Andy and Charlie. The leaders had a great time too and Tony really enjoyed spending his birthday with us.

I would just like to say a quick thanks to all the leaders who came to help - Mark, Jane, Tony, Marg, Darren and parent helper John, THANK YOU your all stars!

ALSO - DON'T FORGET to attend the PEAK 2010 meeting the week after next as there are forms that need completing - without them you WILL NOT be able to attend!!! You MUST attend with your parents as we will be giving you your kit lists, a run down of the week, rules and regulations and important arrival and departure times. SEE YOU THERE!

If your free tomorrow get yourselves down to the green at Old Whittington for the Old Whit Gala! We will be having a stand there - please come and support us, everything we raise will benefit the group which in turn benefits you. Feel free to come and help or just come along and have a go at hook a duck! There's loads on offer at the gala - its gonna be a scorcher of a day so get out and enjoy the sun, bring your pennies see what you can win, watch the magic show, try your hand at circus skills, bag some bargains and have a drink at the pub - what more could you ask for on a barmy Saturday afternoon? - enjoy! Unfortunately I won't be there as its Lion's patrol camp so no sweets and prizes for me boo hoo :( I look forward to hearing all about it afterwards though. Be lucky!!!!

SURVIVAL BIVVI CAMP! 3rd-4th July 2010

You should all have recieved your bivouac camp letter last Tues (sorry I wasn't there, I was at a leaders meeting)- If you're coming get it filled in and back to me a.s.a.p because I need to let the camp know the numbers.
Bivouac-ing is an essential part of the survival skills badge so should you attend and participate well you will gain a badge from the weekend - bonus!
REMEMBER this is not a camp like our previous ones, you will not be fed unless you cook and prep it yourselves, you will not sleep in a dry warm tent, you will not be eating at tables and benches, you will get dirty, you will have to work BUT as 1st Whittington ALWAYS does - you will have a laugh!!!!!!!
You only need minimal kit of a bivouac bag, a waterproof, warm sweater, toothbrush, sleeping bag etc. You probably won't even get changed all weekend - when we did this camp previously everyone went home dirty and smelling of smoke but had made some great memories - I can still see James's splattered (stuck to the billy can) eggs!!!
Don't worry if you feel such a camp is not for you, we're just giving you an opportunity, only take it if you really want to and can cope with being outdoors 100%.

As leaders we're all looking forward to it, sleeping in a plastic bag is such fun!!!

At the Car Wash !

The sun was shining, posters were put up, Peak 107 had been rung and we were armed and ready with our sponges & buckets- everone worked well as a team and we got the job done (including a fair few vans!).
Huge thanks go out to K & B Rouse construction for the use of their site and jet wash equipment today. Many thanks go to Pete, Tony, Marg, Mark & Ash (and a bit from John too) for helping out along with Hayley, Harvey, Ella, Kieran J, Joseph, Keiran T, Matthew, Aimee, Megan, Andy, Conner & Martin.Well done we've raised a further £185.00 toward new camping equipment, silliness and fun on Peak!!!!! Thank you too to the parents who came and supported us-YOUR EFFORTS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
(and I didn't get too wet either - result!)

Way Hay!!!!! What a cracking camp eh?

WELL DONE to the district for a great camp. We were blessed with the weather - I think it was the hawaiin leaders outfits that kept the rain at bay!
Loads of activities and events went on throughout the days to keep us busy and we just generally enjoyed being together and having a laugh.
What did we get up to????
* candy floss eating
* lazer quest
* drumming
* badge making
* pyrograph
* 3 legged race
* crate stacking competition
* football competition
* pit truck racing
* scouts own-EGGY BREAD STYLE!" (thanks Ella, Harv, Kieran, Andy & Martin for that laugh out loud moment)
* skateboarding
* bucking bronco
* circus skills
* tile painting
* clock making
* 100 person leap frog (which turned out to be over 140!)
* Outsinging Helios explorers at 11.30pm! (as best we could)
* raving at the scout camp fire
* watching scott and Liz look a wee bit silly on stage (well Scott certainly did)
and much more that I can't remember.

Scouts, you were amazing - THANK YOU! You helped out the cubs, did jobs around the camp, didn't cause us leaders any grief and were a delight to be with. Many of you met up with friends on camp you never knew were in scouting, and you older ones spent time with the explorers (they're not that scary really are they??). Well done to all the scouts who participated in the troop competitions too, especially Aimee for running her socks off in the pit truck race -it was such a long run for little legs!

Camp quotes included "I've been on lazer quest 16 times!" and I especially liked "ooooo can we have a shandy??" from one of the cubs. (I am afraid I can't publish the leader ones lol)

Thanks to all the leaders who made everything run smoothly, I hope you're not as shattered as me!

Photo's will be available to view at the AGM

Here's to the next one eh? PEAK 2010 -LOOK OUT - HERE COME 1ST WHITTINGTON!!!!!

Happy mothers day Mums!

A huge thank you goes out to the fellowship for helping us tonight to create our mothers day gifts. Pyrographing and ribbon flowed as did the poster making - thank you scouts for making a start on our presentation work for our Badge presentation evening coming up after easter. A good night was had by all and it all counts towards your creative challenge.
I am pleased so many scouts managed to make the journey to a different base as it was an opportunity for you to actually see inside our headquarters rather than go into the scout shop and wonder "what's behind that door?".
Once again thank you fellowship, especially for allowing us to encroach on your meeting night.
